Success Stories

United Utilities

United Utilities supplies water to homes and businesses across the North West of England. The organisation has over 5,500 staff spread across multiple sites. We worked with them to implement a clear and structured approach to workplace wellbeing that would have a meaningful impact for every member of staff, with a focus on physical activity and mental health.

The Challenge

Having over 5,500 staff, 3000 at head office, there was already a culture of health and wellbeing across United Utilities with many initiatives in place. The challenge was to continue their journey of improvement and provide validation for their existing wellbeing policies and practices.

Health@Work were able to work very closely with United Utilities wellbeing team. A number of new initiatives were suggested, and existing good practices were endorsed and benchmarked. As a result, United Utilities were able to improve further and reach “Excellence” on a number of categories. United Utilities continue their successful journey.

  • Improve on existing initiatives
  • Continue their journey to excellence
  • Keep everybody engaged
  • Maintain the energy
  • Reward success

What We Did

A comprehensive programme was agreed with United Utilities. The aim was to encourage engagement from the very top of the organisation with senior managers being involved in the interview and feedback processes. A cross-section of employees from numerous departments across the business were also interviewed and attended focus groups to produce qualitative and quantitative data.

Although the feedback from the interviews and focus groups were extremely positive, it did highlight issues that managers may not have been aware of. This gave them the opportunity to correct concerns as well as providing them with a benchmark.

  • Dedicated consultants
  • Interviews, surveys and focus groups provided qualitative and quantitative data
  • Numerous site visits
  • Detailed and comprehensive recommendations
  • Follow up discussion with management teams on suggested improvements

“The accreditation gives us validation that its working and helps make sure everything we are doing is the right thing"
