South Staffordshire Council

Organisation: South Staffordshire Council

Sector: Public

Location: West Midlands, UK

About: South Staffordshire Council is a district council based in the heart of England. Recognised as UK Council of the Year 2022, the council began working with Health@Work in 2021 for their first Workplace Wellbeing Accreditation.

Why the Workplace Wellbeing Charter?

South Staffordshire Council recognises the importance of having an independent lens when it comes to wellbeing practices. Having first worked with Health@Work in 2021, the council continues to use the accreditation as an organisational framework for best practice.

The council was delighted to receive confirmation of their reaccreditation in November 2025. This achievement demonstrates their dedication to ensuring that leadership practices and workplace culture reflect their core values.

The Accreditation Process

During the accreditation process, the council worked closely with their Wellbeing Consultant, Suzanne, to review leadership quality, workplace culture, and investment in training. Using the Charter’s framework, they assessed policies, practices, and initiatives against the eight standards.

The process provided an expert, independent evaluation of the council’s employee experience programme. The accreditation also reinforced that South Staffordshire Council’s culture is built in partnership with employees, ensuring that wellbeing practices are embedded across the organisation.

Results

The Workplace Wellbeing Charter Accreditation has enabled South Staffordshire Council to maintain and expand its Wellbeing Strategy.

Key achievements include:

  • Excellence ratings in leadership, inclusion, health and safety, and attendance management.
  • Over 97% of staff survey respondents would recommend South Staffordshire Council as an employer.
  • Flexibility and support ratings increased from 8.7 in 2021 to 9.10 in 2025.
  • Celebratory event held recognising the hard work and dedication of the team.

The Verdict

Speaking on their Workplace Wellbeing Accreditation experience, Wendy Bridgwater, Assistant Director of Organisation and People said:

“The Workplace Wellbeing Accreditation offers more than a certificate; it provides an independent, expert review of our wellbeing practices, including leadership quality, inclusive culture, and investment in training and career progression. This recognition reflects the values we live by and the culture we’ve built in partnership with our employees. Health@Work’s framework adds real value by measuring meaningful activities and offering invaluable advice and resources throughout the process and beyond. When reading our final report, we really felt like our Wellbeing Consultant Suzanne knew us as an organisation and the support we received from her throughout the process was invaluable.”
