How to Mend a Broken Heart

14th February 2020

Valentine’s day has arrived when many hearts will be in a flutter. However, it is important to know that on many occasions people’s hearts can stop fluttering and go into fibrillation. According to the British Heart Foundation, there are more than 30,000 out of hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year; with the survival rate less than 1 in 10.

Would you know what to do in a situation where someone collapses with a suspected heart attack? Is your company prepared?

It is important that organisations understand that they have a legal requirement to provide First Aid in the workplace. The amount of provision depends on the number of employees and risks within the workplace. It is important that you have nominated trained First Aiders and it is best practice to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Health@Work recommends that First Aiders refresh their basic life support element (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) every year even though their certification would last 3 years.

When it comes to treating a suspected heart attack, the following steps should be taken:

  1. Call 999 as soon as possible
  2. Help the person sit down on the floor in a W position
  3. Reassure the person
